Educators as “First Responders:” Mental Health in the Classroom
Classroom teachers, deans, division heads, nurses, coaches, counselors
Educators, by choice or necessity, tend to be keen observers of student behavior who are routinely called upon to provide direct support to children and adolescents with a range of emotional vulnerabilities. In addition, they are often the first to call children's issues to parents' attention, frequently finding themselves "consulting" to parents about complex behavioral problem-solving. Following an overview of the student mental health landscape with suggested best practices, we will focus our conversation on participant questions, concerns, and "case studies" from their own experiences as teachers, counselors, and administrators. In this workshop for teachers, administrators, coaches and dorm parents, we will discuss helping students with emotional challenges, including peer or family issues, anxiety, and depression.
Following the formal presentation, we will focus our conversation on participant questions and “case studies” from your own experiences.
